Predicting Faults To Prevent Costly Downtime

CERN is a European research organization and home to the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). Researchers working at the laboratory analyze huge numbers of subatomic particle collisions every day, creating many petabytes of raw data.

Oracle data lake solutions are helping the scientists at CERN to analyze the sensor data from the cryogenics system of the LHC. (A temperature of 1.9 K (-271.3˚C) – colder than outer space – must be maintained.) This data helps them predict issues that could cause the cooling system to fail, which would stop the project for unacceptably long periods of time.

The result? The CERN team can correlate previous fault conditions in the cooling systems with many other factors to help work out what might predict a new fault. These predictions could be used to dramatically improve efficiency by ensuring any fixes can be planned for, and scheduled within maintenance windows.

The insights gained help scientists and engineering teams in their work, designing the next generation of higher performing particle colliders.

By working with Oracle through CERN openlab, researchers at CERN are exploring machine-learning approaches that will help identify potential problems in the cooling systems of its particle accelerators before they happen. This means they can fix them during scheduled maintenance, avoiding time-consuming special shutdowns for unexpected problems.
